The Chifley sprinter, 16, a Rebel Southern Courier Junior Sports Star Award nominee, captured the gold in the women’s 400m final of the Youth Olympic Games in China in another blistering time.
The South Sydney Athletics Club and former Randwick Botany Little Athletics Club member clocked a new personal best (PB) time of 52.50sec in the A final.
The slick time eclipsed her previous PB of 52.78sec set in the opening heat of the 400m at Nanjing Olympic Stadium.
The teenage flyer controlled the race from the outset, getting out of the blocks first and crossing the line ahead of all her competitors to capture the gold.
Thornton, a Year 11 Brigidine College, Randwick student, was the sole Australian runner and the fastest qualifier in the eight-person final.
